Technology
Traditional selectorized weight machines require the user to choose a fixed number of physical plates before starting an exercise set. If the load becomes too challenging mid-set, or if the user experiences fatigue, they must halt the movement entirely, return the stack to resting position, adjust the selector pin, and re-engage.
U.S. Patent No. 11,883,717 B2 solves this biomechanical limitation by integrating real-time movement sensing, an embedded controller, and a bidirectional electric motor directly with a conventional cable-and-pulley weight stack.
-
STAGE 01Load Calibration
Proximity sensors read plate markers to confirm pinned load; initial reps establish individual range of motion.
-
STAGE 02Real-Time Kinematics
Pulley-mounted rotary encoder samples travel distance, directional vector, and instantaneous velocity.
-
STAGE 03State Evaluation
Controller compares real-time repetition dynamics against baseline kinematic curves to identify fatigue thresholds.
-
STAGE 04Motor Modulation
Bidirectional motor applies instantaneous torque to assist, overload, or brake without altering plate pin setting.
System Architecture
The patented technology is structured into four integrated electromechanical subsystems:
Stack & Frame Assembly
A conventional rigid frame with physical selectorized iron plates, a selector rod, a manual selector pin, and aircraft-grade cables routed through low-friction pulleys to a user grip.
Proximity & Position Sensing
Hall-effect proximity sensors positioned along the frame read magnetic markers on each weight plate to determine the exact mass selected. A rotary encoder continuously tracks cable displacement, direction, and velocity.
Bidirectional Motor Drive
An electric motor mechanically coupled to a pulley (directly or via a high-torque timing belt) capable of instantaneously injecting assisting or resistive torque into the primary cable path.
Embedded Controller & Memory
An onboard processing unit connected to all sensors and motor drivers that executes closed-loop control algorithms, logs workout telemetry, and interfaces with optional wireless display modules.

Operational Modes
During each repetition, the controller evaluates real-time sensor streams and can execute three distinct operational behaviors:
- Concentric Assistance: If the user’s velocity drops below target thresholds during the lifting phase, the motor injects assisting torque, enabling completion of the repetition safely.
- Concentric Resistance (Overload): For advanced strength protocols, the motor can add counter-rotational resistance to the selected stack during specific segments of the concentric range.
- Eccentric Modulation: During the lowering phase, the motor can provide dynamic braking or add controlled resistive load to maximize eccentric muscular stimulus.
